Rare and Unusual Snowdrop Collection for Shaftesbury..........

In February 2014 the snowdrop project will begin a new aspect of its development - to amass a collection of rare and unusual snowdrops to be held in public trust in Shaftesbury.

Over time (it will take years as well as dedication), it is intended to establish Shaftesbury as the home of a Royal Horticultural Society recognised National Collection of snowdrops. We are planning to launch this initiative on February 16th 2014 at Shaftesbury Abbey. To make this endeavour possible we have enlisted the support of “Avon Bulbs” – an extremely prestigious snowdrop nursery from Somerset.

We will launch the collection with a private viewing of 20+ rare snowdrops: the guests and visitors over the following week will be invited to become the sponsor of one or more varieties.

These first rare snowdrops will be displayed at the Abbey from Saturday 15th - 23rd February during the Snowdrop Festival. This aspect of the festival will become the jewel in the crown of the Shaftesbury Snowdrop Community Legacy project. The Abbey Is open from !0am - 4pm daily except Sunday 16th when visitor entry will close at 12.30pm

The launch of this collection would not be possible without the generous sponsorship of BV Dairy a fitting sponsor for Galanthus -"The Milk Flower"

The snowdrops and their care.........

We are establishing a Trust and a board of trustees to both take ownership of the snowdrops for the benefit of the town and lend their assistance in developing the collection. In addition we are seeking the right place to establish our secure nursery for the collection.
