The Shaftesbury Snowdrops Heritage Collection

February 2014 saw the launch of the Shaftesbury Snowdrops Heritage Collection. The aim is to bringing together Galanthus species, hybrids and their cultivars to be held in trust in Shaftesbury for the enjoyment of visitors to the Shaftesbury Snowdrop Festival. The ultimate goal is to establish Shaftesbury as the home of a Royal Horticultural Society recognised National Collection of snowdrops.

This is a truly community project, with a team of volunteers maintaining the bulbs in gardens throughout the town. By spreading out the collection in this way we maximise public involvement and minimise risk to the collection to loss through disease or damage. Volunteers cared for and propagate the snowdrops in the collection to ensure that in time we have bulbs of each donated variety growing in several secure sites.

Each year we welcome visitors to view pots of the snowdrops in flower in the grounds of Shaftesbury Abbey. This beautiful setting features a swathe of Galanthus nivalis growing naturalised and which may date back to the time of the first snowdrops being brought to the country. In addition we have planted Galanthus elwesii and Galanthus woronowii in separate areas to enable comparison between different species.

The collection is being built through sponsorship to enable the collection to purchase new varieties, or through the direct donation of snowdrop plants and bulbs. It is hoped that the Heritage Collection will allow many wonderful collections amassed over a lifetime, true longevity as collections are often broken up or forgotten when the gardener is unable to continue.

If you would like to sponsor or donate a snowdrop variety please contact the Snowdrop team at info@shaftesburysnowdrops.org

Our sincere thanks to Avon Bulbs for supplying the initial snowdrops for sponsorship and for their continued support through providing show quality pots of snowdrops for inclusion in the Abbey display each year. We would also like to thank the authors of “Snowdrops: A Monograph of Cultivated Galanthus” for allowing us the use of text and images in the snowdrop information posters at the Abbey.
